Tami shares Horizon of Hope with community

Tami took the message of Horizon of Hope to breast cancer survivors and other members of the community in support of a program that helps women gain access to mammography services. Tami was the keynote speaker at the Spring into Pink Luncheon in Granville, Ohio, near the Home Office. The event raises funds for SASS for Breast Cancer (Screening and Survivor Support). Tami shared the power of Horizon of Hope, explaining that success of our campaign is attributable to our Leaders, Home Consultants, customers and employees. "What started as a small campaign in partnership with the American Cancer Society has blossomed into a powerful grassroots movement," she said.

Since 1995, Horizon of Hope has raised more than $14 million and touched more than 20 million women with potentially life-saving information about early detection, healthy living and mammograms.Tami urged women to get a mammogram to establish a baseline, and then to take possession of their mammogram results annually so they can be compared each year to the baseline and previous years. That is the best way for doctors and radiologists to determine if there are any changes. She also explained that Horizon of Hope enables the American Cancer Society to focus on programs and research that have an impact on the effectiveness of mammograms and help those living with breast cancer to experience an improved quality of life.

Here are three recent projects Tami outlined:

• Dr. Barbara Andersen of The Ohio State University. Her research examines how the stress of breast cancer treatment can have a negative effect on the immune system, possibly reducing the ability to resist recurrence or progression. Her work has shown that interventions to reduce stress have a positive impact and lower the risk.
  
  
• Support of important scientific conferences. Horizon of Hope has enabled the world’s experts to gather and share research, address best practices and come up with solutions. Just last month, Horizon of Hope supported an important scientific workshop on breast cancer rehabilitation.
  
  
• Improving accuracy of mammograms. Horizon of Hope has enabled ACS to invest in initiatives to improve radiologists’ interpretive skills, including creating a continuing medical education course to help maintain or improve cancer detection rates. This is an ongoing project at centers across the country, including University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle; Oregon Health and Science University, Portland; University of California at San Francisco; University of New Mexico Health Science Center; University of Vermont, Burlington; Dartmouth Medical School, Dartmouth;University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
