The History of The Longaberger Company

In 1896, when the Longaberger family moved to Dresden, Ohio, the tiny village was a rural transportation and industrial hub in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. There was a hotel on Main Street, three railroad stations, a woolen mill and a paper mill. A small canal connected the community with the historic Ohio Canal, transforming the village into a bustling town.

In the early 1900s, baskets were as commonplace as paper bags and plastic containers are now. Ware baskets, made at the Dresden Basket Factory, were used to carry pottery ware for the region’s booming pottery industry.

In 1919, a young man named J.W. Longaberger took a job with the Dresden Basket Factory. As a full-time apprentice, he meticulously learned the basket making art by first crafting basket bottoms. Later, he mastered the precise, tight weaving style that would become his trademark. J.W. grew to love the art of basket making.

In 1934, a fifth child was born to J.W. and his wife Bonnie — Dave Longaberger. Early in life, Dave had three strikes against him. His family was economically disadvantaged, he stuttered so badly people had difficulty understanding him, and he had epilepsy in a time when the condition was not widely understood.

Dave’s liabilities did not stand in the way of his ambition, however. As a youngster he worked in a grocery store, shoveled snow, delivered newspapers, mowed grass and hauled trash. He ran the projectors at the local movie house too. Because Dave was always making money from one job or another, his family called him the “25-cent millionaire.”

At age 21, Dave finally graduated from high school. He began his career by driving a bread truck for several years for two different bakeries. From 1961-1962, Dave served in the U.S. Army.

In the early 1960s, his first daughter, Tami, was born. Dave was eager to take the many lessons he had learned over the years and put them to work to create his own business to support his family. In 1963, when Harry’s Dairy Bar in Dresden came up for sale, Dave and his wife bought it. The restaurant had two booths, two tables and eight stools.

Later, Dave bought the defunct A&P grocery store in town. He remodeled and expanded the building, and opened the Dresden IGA Foodliner. As always, Dave worked very hard during those years. Between both businesses, he earned a solid living for his family.

In the early 1970s, Dave noticed that baskets were becoming very popular. He also noticed that many department stores were beginning to sell imported baskets. Dave wondered if people would appreciate locally-made baskets like the fine handcrafted ones his father used to make. So, he asked his father to make a dozen market baskets, and then took them to a nearby town. They sold immediately and the shop requested more!

J.W. made several dozen more baskets. Sadly, however, J.W. died at the age of 71, just as the family trade was ramping up.

Dave opened J.W.’s Handwoven Baskets in 1976 in Dresden. Interest in these beautiful handmade baskets continued to grow. Eventually, Dave had to find a place to expand his small basket factory. He found a very unlikely building: the old woolen mill where his mother had worked, built in the 1890s. It had been vacant since 1955, and had broken windows, uneven floors and a sagging roof. But the brick walls were solid and strong.

In this humble building, Dave envisioned a basket factory with hundreds of craftsmen and craftswomen weaving, tacking, talking and laughing. He knew from his previous business ventures that he had a knack for envisioning the unlikely. So he attacked his new venture with enthusiasm.

Dave became increasingly convinced that American consumers wanted the handmade craftsmanship and quality of Longaberger baskets. He tried different ways to sell baskets at malls, department stores and other retail outlets, with varying degrees of success. In 1978, Dave discovered that the most effective way to sell the company’s baskets was not through retail outlets but through home shows, where an educated home consultant could show Longaberger baskets, share the history and explain the craftsmanship that each basket holds.

With that discovery, the Longaberger Company’s direct sales organization was born.

Over the years, customers have developed an amazing passion for Longaberger baskets. The family’s tradition of philanthropy is continued each year through The Longaberger Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars to local charities and educational institutions since its inception in 1998. The company’s Horizon of Hope initiative has raised more than $18 million over the past 15 years for breast cancer research.

Today, The Longaberger Company remains America’s premier maker of handcrafted baskets and offers other home and lifestyle products, including pottery, wrought iron and fabric accessories. The company is based in Newark, Ohio, and there are thousands of independent Home Consultants located in all U.S. states who sell Longaberger products directly to customers.

July 1

A Message from JRjr

July 1, 2016

Dear Longaberger Friend:

As we begin the long Fourth of July holiday weekend, I have a simple message this week. I just want to send from my family to yours our warmest wishes for a safe, fun holiday celebration!

Of all the holidays on the calendar, at least here in the United States, this one is as close to pure celebration as it gets.

Some of our holidays are religious. Others are about somber remembrance of sacrifice. In the case of the Fourth of July, it seems that it’s mostly about cheering – making joyful noises, with or without fireworks, to share our happiness at living in this, the most amazing and wonderful country in the world.

At Longaberger, there’s a good reason why we’re so proud of our baskets being handmade in the United States, by artisans whose craft goes back many generations right in America’s heartland. Somehow, to us, those baskets aren’t just baskets. They’re a piece of America…they give joy to us…joy to the customers who buy them…and joy to the men and women who make them.

Pure joy – like the joy when people gather for a Fourth of July picnic...like the joy when we gather with our Longaberger family, as we will at the Bee in a few weeks.

It’s with that pride of our craft and our pride in our county that I’ve asked our basket makers to create a few baskets that celebrate America. The first basket in this collection is called the American Spirit Basket. It’s available beginning today -- and it’s beautiful!

Joy is all around us – at Longaberger, in our families and in our nation. Sure, there are things in the world that are far from joyful – but this weekend, we remember that woven around us is a basket of American joy.

Happy Fourth to you and yours!

Always BEElieve,

JRjr

A Message from JRjr

June 17, 2016

Dear Longaberger Friend:

No home can be strong, happy, and peaceful without unity. A family breaks into pieces when they are not united in their cause. We are all free and individual people but we still need and depend on others. Alone we cannot produce everything we need and that is what is beautiful about teamwork and collaboration, we don’t need to…

Longaberger basket header

It is a necessary function to be united. Without it everything stops and ceases to be. Unity is a foundation which can be seen all over the world in societies, nations, companies, and so on. A family like ours in particular relies on unity to keep us moving forward toward a brighter future and a better tomorrow.

When we set big goals for ourselves oftentimes we overlook the profound affect others play into helping us achieve those goals and dreams. Think in the animal kingdom: alone ants are tiny, small, and weak. When they work together they form a strong army that builds and supports each other.

We are all here to make our goals and dreams come true, but it only happens if we all work together. Today we are firmly united and reminding you that unity is strength. I want you to remember this over the next couple days: you are not alone and you stand united with us…

Always BEElieve,

JRjr

A Message from JRjr

June 10, 2016

Dear Longaberger Friend:

Isn’t it great that our business is one giant party?

When you think about it, it really is! Not just like a birthday party with cake and balloons…or even just a home party to sell baskets…but a kind of ONGOING party where we share fun and good times with people we love.

In a lot of businesses – in fact, in most businesses – you have to conform, you have to follow a set of rules for everything you do.

At Longaberger, we experience our greatest success when we can just be ourselves – having fun; connecting with people; laughing; being happy! Of course we follow sensible rules – but what we do is not about procedures and sales, but instead about people and experiences.

When you truly understand what makes our business unique – and most of all, when you share it with others – I believe it’s almost impossible not to experience success.

So, in that spirit, I want to ask you a favor after you read this week’s note… I want you to do something that makes YOU happy – truly happy! Something that puts a smile on your face and song in your heart. :)

It doesn’t have to be anything directly connected with your Longaberger business. It may be something for you…for your family…for a friend…for a customer…

Because we share the same passion to make others happy, I am going to bet that whatever makes you happiest involves others…and weaving a web of happiness is the heart of who we are!

THAT is the essence of our business!

Always BEElieve,

JRjr

A Message from JRjr

June 3, 2016

Dear Longaberger Friend:

New Year’s Day is only 27 days away.

Don’t worry, I haven’t gone crazy :) – what I mean is, we’re entering the final month of our Longaberger sales year!

That’s right: this amazing, exciting, incredibly eventful 2015-2016 sales year will conclude on June 30. I can’t believe it – can you?

I can hardly find the words to tell you how much I’ve loved being a part this spectacular sales year from beginning to end! In fact, it’s been one of the most rewarding and special years of my life, thanks to all of you! Best of all – WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED …this is only the first of many more exciting Longaberger years to come!

Think about what we’ve accomplished together since last June. We’ve made thousands of people all over the country very happy…and we’ve given fresh energy and confidence to our wonderful Longaberger world:

  • We’re delivering products to your customers better than we have in years;
  • Our business is financially healthy;
  • We’ve reinvented and refreshed the Collectors Club and we’ve welcomed more than 5,000 new or returning members;
  • We’ve made investments in your “home away from home,” the Longaberger Homestead
  • To sum up, as my kids would say: We’ve got it going on!!!

As you set your goals for June, I hope that they include plans to meet – or better yet, exceed – your annual goals for the sales year. I know you can do it – I have faith in you!

I’d love nothing more than to recognize you on stage – under the bright stars – during our recognition celebration at Bee 2016. I can’t wait for that exciting moment.

Let’s make June a month to BEE all that we can BEE together!

Always BEElieve,

JRjr

Tech Talk

Technology tips you can use from your Consultant Support Team:

Selecting a Hostess on your party.

Your Consultant Support team receives many calls stating: “I thought I entered my hostess name, but the party is showing my name.”

How to successfully set up Hostess name on a party:

  • Click on Create A Party- you will come to the Setup Screen
  • Fill in the Invitation information in the fields marked Red in Section 1a
  • Then click on “Save Party”
  • You will see Section 1b appear
  • Click on the drop down and choose your Hostess
  • Then go to the right side of the page and click on “Save/Invite Host”
  • Click on “Next”
  • You should see your Hostess’ name in the Guest List in Section 1 with the letter “H” beside the name
  • You should also see her name at the top of the screen as the Hostess

Tip 1: The system automatically puts you as the consultant in as Hostess.

Tip 2: If you are the hostess, be sure to click the drop down and choose your Customer file instead of your consultant file. That way you will not have to add your name in the Guest List, which saves a step

Over the past 20 years, Longaberger’s Horizon of Hope has raised over $ 17 million for breast cancer research and touched more than 20 million lives with a unique message of hope. If a small pink basket can do that much good for so many — just imagine how much good a rainbow of baskets can do?

This year, Horizon of Hope is proud to feature five colors of baskets, each dedicated to supporting a unique and worthy cause! While we have identified the 2016 causes as Breast Cancer, Heart Health, Alzheimer’s, Autism and Animal Welfare, the final recipients are up to you. Longaberger will dedicate $ 2 from each Horizon of Hope Basket sold to the cause of the corresponding color.

We invite you, our Longaberger community, to nominate a qualified 501(c)(3) organization that you want considered as a Horizon of Hope recipient. Simply visit Longaberger.com between July 1 and August 15 to submit your request – and let the hope flow!
